I won
I won two tickets to this weekend's Seattle Retro Gaming Expo in a contest sponsored by the Stranger. The contest sought the "best classic video game-related story—whether defeat, triumph, or other." The judges chose my "perfect mix of comedy and horror," a "quintessential formative gamer moment" that "made us laugh out loud." My story: My dad was playing Super Mario Bros. World 7-4. During the Bowser fight he yanked backward, flipping his chair, sending his head into the space heater. Blood poured forth.
I arrived to the scene—I was maybe six—and apparently asked "Do you want me to take over for you?" | | Sunday, May 22nd, 2011 | | 12:48 am |
Seeing "The Future"
Tonight I saw Miranda July's new film The Future. Unlike her previous feature-length film Me and You and Everyone We Know, The Future is sad. I enjoy the film though. Seeing The Future reminds me that the month Me and You and Everyone We Know debuted, June 2005, Ben and I broke up. Earlier this year we broke up again. In 2005 we broke up for three months. In January we broke up for five minutes. Ben and I marry in September. With help from a counselor we communicate better than ever and are excited to marry. In 2005 seeing a Miranda July movie in the theater seemed novel. Seeing one in 2011 still seems novel. Two thousand five is also the year I saw Brokeback Mountain, which destroyed me. I think Brokeback prepared me well for The Future though I guess I should wait to see whether physical pain occurs. Brokeback took a day. Then again when I saw Brokeback I'd recently developed IBS that went undiagnosed until 2009. I avoid sad movies. | | Sunday, April 24th, 2011 | | 4:54 pm |

"Tableau a la Rousseau" by David R. Slavitt
That lions like lavender is amiable; for the mane's tawny to find complement in the green spike with the sharp accent of the blossom is not mere whimsy, as delight in catnip would be, but somehow right. One can nearly see in those slow yellow eyes a need to express the innate refinement lions have, and lavender must be a relief from the flesh-red, blood-red redness of their usual provender and the bloody obviousness of crimson with gold. Or, it may be the odor, or just to adore such a vegetable vegetable. It extends the range of lions, even as they extend its possibilities: they may love most to patronize, to let it be said that among the lovers of lavender are lions. | | Thursday, January 13th, 2011 | | 9:19 pm |

Though I have vehemently disagreed with your Bruins opinions over the years and find your fawning reverence for baseball more than a bit over the top, I absolutely applaud you for having the courage to come out publicly. In doing so, you have been the opposite of selfish. In fact, you have provided a public service, on any number of levels. | | Friday, December 31st, 2010 | | 12:19 pm |
